How Often Should You Buy New Pajamas

You should buy new pajamas every 1 to 3 years. If you wear the same set of pajamas every night, then make sure to buy new every year, but if you swap among a few different clothes then it can stretch to 3 years.

What Happens If You Wear Old Pajamas?

If you’re only meant to wear the same pajamas for 3 years, you might be wondering what happens if you break that rule.

Because we sweat at night, our skin will become irritated, as the material designed to cool you and project you will no longer have the strength.

You lie down all night, which causes the clothes to rub against your body and the bed. This friction wears down the pajama, reducing its ability to cool you effectively.

This also means your sweat is more likely to stay on your skin, making it the perfect place for bacteria to grow.

By wearing old pajamas you can effectively give yourself a cold.

Those are the two main reasons to change your pajamas –  to protect your skin from damage and to protect your body against illness.

How Many Nights Can You Wear The Same Pajamas

You can wear the same pair of pajamas for 3 nights in a row without washing them, before they start to negatively affect your skin. However, if you sweat a lot at night, you should change your pajamas daily.

This figure will also change if you wear your pajamas as loungewear instead of saving them for the night. The additional time spent in the set will add more sweat and dead skin cells to the fabric.

When we sweat into our pajamas, we allow our body to lay next to dead skin cells and excreted oils. These can clog up our pores causing spots, cracked skin, and possibly infections.

Ideally, you should wash your pajamas every night, but if you aren’t a heavy night sweater and don’t wear your pajamas as loungewear then you can push to 3 nights of consecutive wearing.

When Buying New Pajamas What Should You Consider

Ideally, you want to wear the softest pajamas that can last for a long time.

When it comes to comfort, you want to avoid pajamas with buttons, elastic, or collars as they will pull at your skin while you are sleeping.

The material should be soft, skin-friendly, and airy. This often means buying silk or cotton textures. Natural materials are much better for aeration and protection than synthetic options so keep that in mind.

Lastly, you want to make sure it fits you correctly. Everyone’s body size is different. Each of our bodies has curves in different places and holds our clothes differently. You need a set of pajamas that can fit comfortably on your body without being stretched in some areas and baggy in others.

Should You Wear Underwear To Bed?

You should not wear underwear to bed. The added layer can create extra heat in the lower area of your body, which will cause you to sweat more. The added moisture being so close to your genitals can cause yeast, bacteria, and infections to form.

The same issue can occur from wearing clothes that are too tight or sleeping with too many layers on.

You need your body to breathe and aerate to avoid moisture buildup.

Are There Eco-Friendly Pajamas?

There are eco-friendly pajamas on the market and they are not as hard to find as you may think. Any pajamas made from organic cotton, wool, hemp, silk, or fleece means it has been made with natural ingredients.

When you are ready to dispose of your pajamas you can feel assured that these materials will naturally decompose without the help of human interference.

Although each of the materials above is commonly found in clothing stores already, there are new options for you to search for as well. For example bamboo, modal and lyocell.

Bamboo has become more popular in recent years, as the plant is fast growing, easy to harvest, and can be produced in large quantities. It is also naturally silky soft and resistant to water.

The only issue with bamboo is that the manufacturing process is still expensive, but as more companies swap to bamboo, this will change.

For a quick recap, you should only wear the same pajamas for a maximum of 3 years, and you should wash them at least every 3 days.

You shouldn’t wear underwear to bed, and your pajamas shouldn’t be tight. Instead, you should look for soft and flexible materials such as cotton or silk
