The project’s popularity exploded rapidly. Within a short timeframe, Moltbot accumulated over 44,200 stars on GitHub. Furthermore, its viral momentum demonstrated real market impact when Cloudflare’s stock surged 14% in premarket trading. Investors recognized that developers were using Cloudflare’s infrastructure to run Moltbot locally, sparking renewed enthusiasm for the company.

The Security Trade-Off

Nevertheless, Moltbot’s power comes with significant risks. While the project incorporates safety considerations—including open-source code that anyone can inspect and local execution rather than cloud-based processing—its core functionality presents inherent dangers.

Entrepreneur Rahul Sood highlighted a critical concern: “‘actually doing things’ means ‘can execute arbitrary commands on your computer.'” This capability opens the door to potential vulnerabilities, particularly through prompt injection attacks. For instance, a malicious actor could send a seemingly innocent WhatsApp message that tricks Moltbot into performing unintended actions without user knowledge.

Careful configuration can reduce these risks. Additionally, users can choose AI models based on their resistance to such attacks. However, complete protection requires running Moltbot in isolation—specifically, on a virtual private server rather than a personal laptop containing sensitive credentials.

Steinberger himself encountered the darker side of internet fame during the rebranding process. Crypto scammers quickly seized his former GitHub username, creating fraudulent projects, as highlighted in a social media post. Although GitHub resolved the issue, the incident spawned approximately twenty scam variations of the legitimate Moltbot account.

This experience underscores an important reality: early-stage projects attract both genuine enthusiasts and bad actors. Consequently, developers who have been vocal about Moltbot’s potential are now equally emphatic about warning newcomers. They stress that approaching Moltbot with the same casual attitude used for ChatGPT could lead to serious consequences.

Who Should Try Moltbot?

Currently, Moltbot exists in early adopter territory, which may actually benefit the project’s development.
